How Long Do DesignEx Nail Extensions Last? What Affects Their Wear Time?
DesignEx nail extensions at Sisters are made to last four weeks or a little longer, and most of what decides the exact number happens after you leave the salon. They’re soft gel nail extensions, so each tip covers your whole nail and is bonded on with gel that’s cured under a lamp. The tip is flexible, so it bends slightly with your own nail when you type or grip a bag handle, and it doesn’t crack as easily as a rigid tip.
Your routine at home still matters, because washing up without gloves can loosen a set early. Cuticle oil every evening and a sensible length help it look fresh right to the end.
What a DesignEx Tip Is Made Of
Each DesignEx tip is shaped in advance from a flexible polymer, and your technician picks the size that fits each nail before bonding it. On our nail extensions menu it sits next to gel extensions built from hard gel and our hand-sculpted Sisters PolySculpt. For a slim, natural-looking nail you’d like to wear for a month, DesignEx nail extensions are the ones we’d point you to.
That Thin Line at the Cuticle
You’ll probably spot it in the mirror one morning while you’re doing your make-up, a thin line of bare nail between your cuticle and the gel. Nothing’s wrong with the set. Your nail has just kept growing and pushed the tip forward with it, which is also why a knock on the car door that week can snap a nail when the same knock on day one wouldn’t have done a thing.
In our experience, thumbs are nearly always the first to lift. DesignEx is listed at up to 4+ weeks on our extensions page, and honestly we’d rather see you at four weeks than have you stretch it to six.
Long Soaks, Sanitiser and Picking at Lifted Edges
Lifting nearly always starts at the cuticle or along the sides. That’s where water and oil work their way between the gel and your own nail. Long soaks do the most harm, so wear rubber gloves for washing up and take breaks from the pool on beach weekends.
Alcohol-based hand sanitiser dries out the skin around the nail, and dry, split cuticles are where small cracks in the gel tend to begin. The habit that ends a set fastest is picking. Once an edge is lifted and you pull at it, water gets under the rest of the nail within days, and you can take a layer of your own nail away with it.
Choosing a Shape You Won't Break
If you’ve ever lost the corner of a nail to a seatbelt buckle, you already know where square tips give way. A medium almond has no corner to catch, and it’s the shape we’d put on anyone who types all day or has small children pulling at their hands. Most nail art on top is fine. The one thing we’d hold back on is crystals, because they stand up off the nail and snag on knitwear, so one or two accent nails is plenty.
Taking DesignEx Off Without Damaging Your Nails
When the set has done its four weeks, have your DesignEx nail extensions soaked off in the salon instead of peeling them at home. Soaking lets the gel soften and release, and your natural nail keeps its top layers. After a month under gel, your cuticles will be on the dry side, and adding a hand treatment to that appointment helps the skin settle before the next set goes on.

Four weeks or a little more. Long soaks in water and picking at a lifted corner are the two things most likely to cut it short.
Not when they’re put on and soaked off properly. Most of the damage people blame on extensions comes from peeling a set off at home.
